Mission Statement

The Alabama Holocaust Commission, a state agency, utilizes both public and private resources to provide Holocaust and genocide education to all Alabamians.  Through Holocaust and genocide education, the Commission seeks to foster an understanding of one of the darkest periods in the history of mankind.

The Holocaust provides opportunities, especially for our young people, to recognize the need for understanding diverse cultures and the lessons history can teach us about the consequences of discrimination and hatred.  In a democratic society, human rights must be maintained and discrimination and hatred must be eradicated.

The Alabama Holocaust Commission offers its resources in Holocaust and genocide education to everyone, in hopes of teaching remembrance as well as cultivating a sense of our individual and collective responsibilities in maintaining human rights.

The state of Alabama is divided into four regions, each overseen by an Education Coordinator who maintains close contact with teachers, schools and district personnel to develop or enhance Holocaust Education in the region. This structure also provides a network for communication, sharing and long-range planning among the regions.
